Modus Operandi has been available everywhere (except YouTube for some reason; I’m working on that) for a month now. Going by Spotify stats, not too many people jumped on it. I do wonder if there’s some algorithm that screws up its exposure since the release date is set to 2010. Or maybe just no one likes it. Whatever.
Anyway, speaking of Spotify, I’m sort of proud that I finally have a song with over 1,000 plays. It just hit that milestone this week. If you’ve been following me for a while, you might know what song it is: “Pretty Little Ditty.”
I STILL don’t know why it gets so much attention. Is it the name? There is a Red Hot Chili Peppers song with the same name. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. I once thought it was the fact that “pretty” is in the title. But I can see that people are discovering it from my main Spotify profile page, not a direct search result.
The only other possibility I’ve come up with is that there’s an algorithm that detects the music itself. There’s no drums. It’s nothing but clean guitar and me singing. I have no other songs like that. So it seems like it would be too big of a coincidence for that to not be the reason.
You may be wondering what I’m going to do with the mad cash those 1,000 plays have gotten me. I don’t know. I did the math, and that amounts to about $8, so…yeah. I’ll buy a new set of guitar strings or something.
I know no one likes to buy music anymore, but independent music people kind of need it. Streaming doesn’t bring in a whole lot of money.
My next blog post will be pretty long probably. Since essentially all my backlogged music has been released, and there’s nothing new really recorded, I’m at an interesting place. Stay tuned.
